Le Magnifique!
Our Magnificent Greensboro Country Club projects are nearing their end. Never would I’ve imagined that we’d someday be invited to participate in a project of this scale and stature, but here we are putting the finishing touches on everything. It was one of the most challenging projects we’ve ever done - and equally the most rewarding. I knew it would be such a relief to complete, but what I didn’t expect was the sadness of having to move on to other work - away from all the hustle/bustle of daily operations and magnificent staff at the club.
It’s been a few weeks since we wrapped up the projects but I stopped by today for a few pictures and touchups. As soon as I walked into that grand foyer, I could hear the all too familiar and infectious laughter of COO/GM, Friedrich Eder, coming from the admin offices just beyond the elevators. I stepped in to say hello and was met with the warm smiles of he and his right hand ma’am, Executive Assistant, Maria Lemboris.
Maria informed me that we’ve added a new responsibility to her purview. That is, guarding the newly lacquered walls from the damage of unwitting employees who might, in an effort of efficiency, lean a table against the glossy finish. I am most grateful to Friedrich, Maria, Dawn, Gina and so many more who were there to experience the tedious process of creating those lacquered walls and who now help enforce the importance of their keeping.
Each day, Bradshaw and his team would do a walk-thru, during which he would peek through the zippered wall of our quarantined workspace to ask “when will we see that lacquered ceiling?” Now I understand why! It truly is remarkable! I always looked forward to his check-ins because each day was such a production - and I wanted him to appreciate what we were going through to bring his vision to life. One day, we were working in the green hallway when he unzipped the partition to share our process with Congresswoman, Kathy Manning! I quickly protested with a smile “ Hey -no peeking! …especially for celebrities!”
The antique wall treatments in GCC’s foyer are an original element, handprinted and shipped from France back in the earliest years of the club’s inception. We were tasked with the challenge of masking this nearly 100 year old paper for our paint treatments. There was no way to apply even the most delicate of tape to this antique paper surface without the risk of damage, so we devised a plan to install a new frame around the paper, tucking thick masking paper under the edge of the new frame during installation. Once complete, we were able to simply slide the paper from under the edges of our newly installed and lacquered frame, leaving a crisp and unblemished edge.
This artist’s rendering of an early Greensboro Country Club hangs in Maria Lemboris’ office. The great history and treasured memories that have been made here, by the movers and shakers of Greensboro, dating back to 1909, are innumerable. So it’s up to us, the lucky few who get to be a small part of her continuing story, to preserve, protect and restore this anchor of celebration and community at the heart of beautiful Greensboro, NC for future generations to come…
